Five Reasons Why You Should Never Skip your Dental Check-Ups

We all know how important our oral health is, which is why having regularly scheduled appointments is one of the main ways to stay on top of your oral health care. Think about it like this, do you get your car serviced? Yes, so why would your teeth be any different?

Still not convinced, read the 5 reasons why you should never skip your 6 monthly check-up appointment.

1. Prevention of Plaque Build-Up

While you may be keeping plaque at bay by brushing and flossing every day, the brushes that we use daily do not reach all the places that we need them to. This means that when you come in and see us for your regular check-up, we can remove the buildup of plaque from the areas that you can’t reach. A notorious spot for this is our back molars, it is impossible for our toothbrushes to be able to reach those sections as they hit the back of our gums and it can be difficult to brush effectively. This then causes a build-up of plaque and can create a feeding ground for bacteria.

2. Good Habits Start Early

By attending your regular check-up (especially if you have kids) you are ensuring that good habits start early. By keeping up with regular check-ups the dental clinic will become a familiar environment for the whole family and helps to reduce dental anxiety experienced by many.

3. Find & Prevent Cavities

At your check-up we will examine your teeth to look for early signs of tooth decay; if we do find small cavities or white spots on the teeth, we are able to act against the beginning of the decay before the problem worsens. If necessary, we can treat the small cavities with fluoride treatment and treat larger cavities with fillings.

4. Keeps Gum Disease at Bay

The early stages of periodontal disease do not have any symptoms which makes it hard for you to spot the disease on your own. Luckily, dental practitioners are trained to spot gum disease even when it isn’t visible to the naked eye. In most cases, when gum disease is spotted early, it can be reversed with the help and guidance from our dental practitioners.

5. Systematic Health Check-Ups

When you visit our clinic for a check-up, we are not only checking on your teeth, but also look for signs of oral cancer. This is done through a head and neck exam – this consists of checking the lymph nodes, neck, and jaws for swelling, lumps, and any inconsistency or any other symptoms of an illness – without you realizing it you are receiving a systematic health check-up.

Among the many benefits of having a dental check-up every 6 months, you will be able to stay on top of any serious dental issues that arise and most likely avoid any invasive treatment. It is important for us to educate you on the importance of the 6-monthly check-up and ensure that you understand the importance of this.
